5 Important Maintenance Tips for Your Garage Door

Blog

Garage doors are often unappreciated until they are broken and you are unable to leave for work or park your car in the evening after work. A garage door is easily the largest and most commonly moving part of your home, which means that it is very susceptible to wear and tear. While purchasing the right garage door will save you from repair and replacement for a long time, a little maintenance goes a long way in ensuring their functionality.

Here are five maintenance tips to keep your garage doors working perfectly.

1. Inspect the Sound

Constantly check on your garage door by inspecting it. Look for any broken hinges or loose nuts. In addition, listen to the sound it makes when you open and close it. Does it run smoothly? If something is looking or sounding a miss, ensure you contact a professional to give you a detailed inspection, service and repair if need be.

2. Lubrication

Adding a small amount of lubricant to the moving parts of the garage doors will keep it moving silently and efficiently for long. Acquire a spray lubricant and use it to grease up the chain and drive screw in the door opener. In addition, ensure you lubricate the door hinges, tracks and rollers.

3. Test the Balance

If your garage door lacks the proper balance, it will likely strain every time you open and close it, reducing its longevity. To check the balance of the garage door, disconnect the opener by pulling down the release handle. Open and lower it halfway. If it is balanced, the garage door will be able to hold this position without you needing to adjust anything. If it starts to fall or ride up, then you need to adjust the spring's tension.

4. Check on the Auto Reverse Feature

It is important that you test this safety feature frequently to ensure it is functioning properly. The test is quite easy. Place a large piece of wood or brick under the door. If the feature is working, the door should automatically reverse after coming into contact with the object you placed.

5. Tighten Loose Nuts, Bolts and Screws

Every time you open and close the garage door, the hardware loosens and eventually starts to shake and make a rackety noise. This loose hardware can eventually cause the garage door to lose all functionality. It is important that you constantly tighten the bolts and brackets.

After inspecting the garage door, ensure you reinforce and replace anything that needs it. The garage door is an important component of the exterior of your home. Ensure you apply these maintenance tips to keep it functioning effectively.

How to Choose a New Garage Door

Hello! My name is Roger and this is my new blog. Last year, I had some real problems with my garage door. It kept sticking and wouldn't open when I pressed the button on the remote control. In the end, I decided to have the entire thing replaced. I had never chosen a garage door before. I thought it would be easy but in fact, there are lots of things you need to consider. Thankfully, the garage door contractor I went to was really helpful and explained everything I needed to know. Once I had found the perfect garage door, the contractor installed it. I'm really happy with my new garage door.
